Members of the far-left "Squad," including Missouri Democratic Rep. Cori Bush, called for the removal of Associate Justice Clarence Thomas from the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Thomas, according to The Hill, "holds a complete disregard for law and ethics that is incompatible with the trust and confidence placed in federal judges," as per Bush's assertion. "For these reasons, and because the federal judiciary has failed to hold Justice Thomas accountable, I am calling for the beginning of impeachment proceedings regarding Justice Thomas's apparent violations of federal law."
Bush's stance comes in response to revelations that Thomas concealed his opulent trips with Republican megadonor Harlan Crow. He has maintained that he was under no obligation to disclose them and that he did nothing improper.
She joins her fellow New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in calling for his resignation over the incident.
"This goes beyond politics or party. She remarked earlier this month, "The level of corruption is shocking—almost ludicrous. Thomas must be put on trial. The Roberts court will be remembered for blatant corruption, the degradation of democracy, and the abridgement of human rights, barring some significant improvement.
The Hill said that Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., who were original "Squad" members, have also called for his impeachment.
The conservative jurist has received harsh criticism from the political left for a long time, in part because of his court rulings that gave their opponents legal victories. The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision established the constitutional right to an abortion, and Thomas was one of the judges who voted to invalidate that right last year.
