If reelected in 2024, former US president Donald Trump has pledged to put an immediate stop to the slaughter in Ukraine. Additionally, the Republican attacked Joe Biden's foreign policy, stating it had increased global risk.
In a speech to his supporters on Friday in Fort Myers, Florida, Trump declared: "I will get the terrible conflict between Russia and Ukraine ended soon after we win the president, before I ever enter the Oval Office. I'll take care of it right away.
He clarified that he "know[s] both" Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, and Vladimir Zelensky, the president of Ukraine.
Trump, who was president from 2017 to 2021, said that Putin would not have started his military campaign against Ukraine if Trump had been in office because he "got along" with the Russian leader. The Republican asserted, "It's still pretty easy for me to do," referring to resolving the dispute that has lasted for more than a year.
He continued by asserting that, as a result of Biden's alleged poor management of American foreign policy, other leaders had lost respect for the US. Trump said that in order to reclaim it, "you don't need bullets, you don't need tanks, you don't need weapons of any kind, you just need some common sense."
According to the former US president, he was the "only candidate" who could guarantee keeping the US out of World War III. But Trump warned that if "these incompetent people" stay in power, there "will be a war like no other" with nuclear weapons being used by both sides.
The Republican candidate said in the public at least twice last month that if he were elected, it would take him 24 hours to convince Russia and Ukraine to stop warring and talk.
The Ukrainian government terminated negotiations with Moscow in April of last year. Moscow has refuted Kiev's allegations that the withdrawing Russian soldiers carried out crimes in a number of Kiev neighborhoods.
President Zelensky issued a proclamation in October of the previous year prohibiting communication with his Russian counterpart. After four Ukrainian areas were annexed by Russia as the result of referendums, that order was issued.
As long as Kiev gives up its claim to the areas and accepts Russia's conditions, the Kremlin insists that it is ready to peace talks in principle. Ukraine, on the other hand, asserts that it is committed to resolving the war by military victory.
