Florida Police Officer Killed in Six-Minute Battle with Teen Illegal Alien Suspect

On the evening of May 19, Sergeant Michael Kunovich in St. Augustine, Florida, observed the illegal immigrant, 18-year-old Vergilio Aguilar Mendez from Guatemala. Mendez was waiting outside a shuttered shop in the pitch black. Mendez resisted Kunovich's efforts at a pat down to search for weapons, and he made an attempt to run. Mendez persisted in his resistance as more deputies arrived at the scene.

Mendez "resisted violently" for more than six minutes while battling with Kunovich on the ground, according to a news statement from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO), Florida, on May 20. Kunovich fell to the ground after handcuffing Mendez and taking away his pocket knife. Although Kunovich was transported to Flagler Hospital and given "lifesaving measures," he was later declared dead.

Kunovich has served in the SJSO for 25 years. Mendez faces charges of criminal murder and violent resistance. He is being held in the St. Johns County prison without being given bond. Kunovich's funeral was place on Friday, May 26.

While discussing Kunovich's passing in a tweet on May 26, Florida's Republican governor and 2024 presidential contender Ron DeSantis questioned the Biden administration's policies. "An illegal immigrant who took advantage of our open border killed Sergeant Michael Kunovich in the line of duty."

"The Kunovich family and the whole @SJSOPIO community are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Joe Biden's rash immigration policies are harmful and are not appropriate for governing a nation.

Robert Hardwick, the sheriff of St. Johns County, claims that Kunovich passed away due to health problems. According to Sgt. Michael Kunovich, "the suspect chose to try to remove a knife from the left-hand pocket of his pants," and "the struggle was on with Sgt. Michael Kunovich until the next deputy sheriff showed up 37 seconds later," according to First Coast News.

The conflict with our subject ultimately caused Sgt. Michael Kunovich to succumb to certain physical problems, essentially.

Mendez could be deported rather than stand trial as it has been determined that he entered the country unlawfully.

The number of noncitizens detained by border patrol over the past several years has climbed rapidly, according to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). There were 2,438 arrests in the 2020 fiscal year.

In the next two fiscal years, it increased to 10,763 and 12,028 respectively. The border patrol has made 5,193 arrests so far this fiscal year.

In fiscal 2021, there were 1,178 criminal noncitizen arrests for domestic abuse, assault, and battery, overtaking the previous year's total of 1,000. 1,142 arrests in fiscal 2022 were associated with such criminal convictions.

Since President Joe Biden assumed office in January 2021, the nation has seen a dramatic increase in the number of illegal immigrants crossing the Southwest border.

According to CBP data, during the Trump administration's fiscal 2020, border patrol intercepted 458 088 illegal aliens trying to breach the Southwest border.

Under Biden, this increased to 1.73 million in the following fiscal year and to 2.38 million in the following year. In the first six months of the fiscal year 2023, 1.22 million interactions have already taken place. Those who unlawfully cross the border without being apprehended are not taken into consideration.

Recently, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) presented a resolution to remove Biden from office. The Republican legislator claimed during a news conference on May 18 that "Joe Biden has deliberately compromised our national security by refusing to enforce immigration laws and secure our border."

According to statistics supplied by Greene, Biden has allowed more than six million illegal immigrants into the country. His government has blatantly disregarded the legal requirement to maintain operational control.
