Swalwell Cleared By Bi-Partisan House Ethics Committee's 2-Year Investigation Into Affair With Chinese Spy

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) was investigated for two years by the House Ethics Committee over his meetings with an alleged Chinese agent. The committee has since decided against any further action and privately notified Swalwell of their choice. The public won't have access to the letter from the committee.

On April 9th, 2021, the Committee on Ethics informed you that it would investigate allegations made in a complaint. The charges involve the possibility of you breaking laws or norms of behavior in connection with your dealings with Ms. Christine Fang. In the letter, Susan Wild (D-PA), the ranking member, and Michael Guest (R-MS), the chairman, advised you that the committee won't proceed with this matter.

After alleged Chinese spy, Christine Fang, was found to have worked on Swalwell's campaign, the inquiry was initiated, revealing that she had targeted aspiring politicians in California, including Swalwell himself.

Although Swalwell admitted that the FBI had informed him of being the target of a Chinese intelligence operative, he was quick to stress that he had cooperated with law enforcement from the outset. Moreover, he underlined that he had never been accused or charged with any wrongdoing.

Swalwell's political rivals, however, were fixated on the narrative and unproven rumours of a supposed love involvement with Fang, and they constantly attacked him over it. These unsubstantiated claims caused Swalwell to lose his position on the House Intelligence Committee earlier this year.

In a statement made on Tuesday, Swalwell insisted in his innocence and said, "It's time to move on."

"This matter was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for more than two years. They were able to subpoena people. I responded to their questions and provided them with information. They are concluding this case right now and found no misconduct, according to Swalwell.

If the goal of filing this complaint and making false accusations was to quiet me, that won't happen. I'll keep speaking up for my constituents and fighting fervently for democracy, he added.
