Texas Man Guns Down Girlfriend After She Returned From Another State Receiving An Abortion

In a confrontation in a Dallas parking lot, a guy who didn't want his girlfriend to obtain an abortion fatally shot her, according to authorities. As of Friday, he was incarcerated on a murder accusation. According to an affidavit for an arrest warrant, 26-year-old Gabriella Gonzalez was with her boyfriend, 22-year-old Harold Thompson, on Wednesday when he attempted to choke her. She had returned from Colorado the previous evening after travelling there to obtain an abortion.

In September 2021, Texas will outlaw abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, but since Roe v. Wade was overruled last summer, almost all abortions in Texas have been prohibited, save in cases of medical urgency.

According to the affidavit, according to the AP, "it is believed that the suspect was the father of the child." The suspect opposed Gonzalez having an abortion. Gonzalez "shrugs him off," according to authorities, as shown on surveillance footage from the parking lot as the two walk on.

Then Thompson produces a firearm and shoots Gonzalez once in the head. The affidavit claimed that once she hits the ground, Thompson shoots her several times before fleeing. According to investigators, Gonzalez's sister was present at the site and heard the gunfire. Despite seeing Thompson attempt to choke Gonzalez, a second witness was unable to notify the police because she was without her phone.

Thompson was facing assault charges at the time of the shooting after a relative said he choked her in March. The affidavit from March doesn't specifically identify Gonzalez as the victim of the assault, but it does state that the woman told police that Thompson "beat her up multiple times throughout the entirety of their relationship" and that Thompson told police the woman was pregnant with his child at the time. According to the affidavit, the woman "reiterated that she is scared of the suspect because he has threatened to harm her family and her children."

Later on Wednesday, Thompson was detained and is currently being held without bond at the Dallas County Jail.
