Donald Trump's statements during the CNN town hall on Wednesday night prompted E. Jean Carroll, who had just temporarily defeated him in court, to tell the New York Times on Thursday that she is now thinking about filing another defamation complaint against the former president and current front-runner for the GOP nomination in 2024.
Trump attacked Carroll, who earlier this week won five million dollars in compensation and punitive damages from Trump, calling her claims of sexual assault "false" and a "made-up narrative."
I'm unfamiliar with her. She was someone I'd never met. In response to a question from CNN's Kaitlan Collins regarding the rape trial, in which he was convicted responsible for sexual assault, Trump said, "I had no clue who she is.
The remainder of Trump's reaction drew laughter and applause from the live audience, according to the Associated Press. Trump "dismissed a question from Collins about if it would harm his position with female voters and in response, he went into a recitation of Carroll's charges in a mocking manner," according to the AP.
Carroll accused Trump of raping her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman store in the 1990s in 2019. Carroll filed a defamation suit against Trump after his swift denial of the accusations and ruthless assaults on her. Carroll also sued the former president civilly, accusing him of rape.
The Times stated on Thursday morning that Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan, who had earlier in the week won her case, "gave her the transcript of his statements, and that she had read just the first line."
Carroll told the Times that "better people" had criticized her and that "it's just foolish, it's just terrible, horrible, foul, and it scars people."
"On behalf of American young men, I'm unhappy. They are unable to accept this balderdash and this outdated, caveman perspective on women, Carroll said.
When the Times approached Kaplan about another defamation lawsuit, he said, "Everything's on the table, certainly, and we have to give serious attention to it." We must balance the numerous advantages and disadvantages, and we will likely make a choice within the next day or two.
