California GOP Primary Voters Favor Trump Over DeSantis for 2024, New Poll Shows

As per a recently published survey report, it has been revealed that former President Trump has regained his position as the leading choice among the prospective Republican voters for the 2024 primaries in California. This comes after a close competition with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who was previously enjoying a strong position in the state. It remains to be seen how the political scenario shapes up as both personalities have a massive supporter base.

A recent study by the Institute of Government Studies at the University of California-Berkeley revealed that 44% of potential GOP primary voters in the Golden State prefer Donald Trump over other contenders, granting him an 18-point advantage. Comparatively, only 26% of respondents said they supported DeSantis.

Remarkably, the survey depicted an 8-point reversal from a similar study conducted three months prior. In the former results, DeSantis was at the forefront with 37% of respondents supporting him, and only 29% supporting Trump, who at that time entered the race in November.

The survey also included 12 other Republicans, although none of them garnered more than 4% of the state's probable GOP votes. A total of 13% of respondents indicated "other/undecided."

Trump's favorability among the state's registered Republicans increased over the past three months, while DeSantis's marginally decreased. Trump's approval rating increased from 69 to 74 percent between February and this month, while Desantis's decreased from 79 to 75 percent.

The findings highlight how challenging it is for Republican contenders to acquire support while Trump is still in the race. Republican supporters believe Trump is receiving an undue amount of attention from the media and the courts, according to IGS co-director G. Cristina Mora, who also issued a press release with the study. Even in California, where the majority of people have a negative impression of Trump, his presence is apparent.

Trump leads DeSantis by a wide margin, according to Berkeley IGS poll director Mark DiCamillo, although he polls particularly well among highly conservative Republicans, men, non-college grads, and voters between the ages of 50 and 64.

In addition, the poll asked respondents about their opinions of Trump's guilt in the New York case involving author E. Jean Carroll's alleged sexual assault. 66 percent of respondents downplayed the gravity of the conviction, while three in four said they thought it was difficult for Trump to receive a fair trial in New York.

According to 86% of California Republicans polled, the investigations into Trump's behaviour in the wake of the 2020 election "are more about politics and political revenge than about justice and law."

Only 35% of California voters agreed with the statement, while the majority of the state thought that Trump could get a fair trial in New York and that the jury's decision should be respected.

7,465 registered California voters participated in the poll, 1,853 of whom were Republicans, and 1,472 of whom were expected to cast a ballot in the state's Republican presidential primary in March 2024. The poll was conducted May 17–22. The Los Angeles Times co-sponsored it.
