An ongoing investigation into a case of child abuse that rocked the City of Griffin last month has finally culminated in charges against a Tennessee man, his mother, and stepfather. According to the Griffin Police Department, on May 12 they received a complaint from a neighbor who witnessed a small boy taking a barefoot stroll with an adult outside of the city on Wesminister Circle.

When authorities came, the youngster reportedly stated he said he was going to the shop to purchase some food because he was hungry and requested them "please don't make him go back."

The young patient was sent to a nearby hospital where, according to the police, he was stabilized before being moved to another facility for more care. The inquiry that followed led to the arrest of the child's parents, Tyler and Krista Schindley, a few hours later.

Charges against the parents include attempted murder and first-degree child cruelty because they "deliberately withheld sustenance from the juvenile for a lengthy period of time," which caused the youngster "cruel and severe bodily and emotional agony." The warrants said that this resulted in "dental damage and disfiguration," for which they refused medical care.

The parents "locked the juvenile child inside his bedroom, leaving the child alone in the residence, for extended periods of time, and on multiple occasions, without access to lights, food, clothing, or adult interaction and/or assistance," according to the warrant. They also denied the child access to "hot or warm running water, outside view, toilet paper, electronic communication, human interaction, adult supervision, or exit."

Police were investigating into the family's background, Spalding County District Attorney Marie Broder stated during a press conference on May 16. Broder verified there were four other siblings living there, but they didn't seem hurt. The youngsters were home-schooled, according to Broder.

The 11Alive teams observed Ethan Washburn, Krista's 20-year-old son, moving various belongings from their house into his car, which had Tennessee license plates, the night of the parents' arrests. He steadfastly declined to respond to any queries.

According to documents, Washburn was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the same abuse case involving his 10-year-old stepbrother on June 6 and sent to the Spalding County Detention Centre.

According to Washburn's arrest warrants, he punched his "autistic stepbrother" in the "body, head, and face" during the alleged incident. According to the warrants, the attack happened "frequently."

Another warrant claims that "the accused did choke his stepbrother, using both hands wrapping them around his neck."

Along with his mother Krista and stepfather Tyler Schindley, Washburn, a resident of Franklin, Tennessee, is being detained without bond.

There have been no recent updates from Griffin Police on the 10-year-old's health. Police stated that their investigation is still proceeding on Monday night.
