If elected president in 2024, Gov. Ron DeSantis promises to have a military post in North Carolina renamed after a Confederate leader.
Mr. DeSantis announced on Friday that he will work to get a significant military installation in the state renamed Fort Bragg at the North Carolina Republican Party convention.
Republican candidate for president from Florida Ron DeSantis stated, "I also look forward to returning the name of Fort Bragg to our outstanding military facility in Fayetteville, North Carolina." We won't allow political correctness to take over since the name and base are iconic.
The federal government renamed Fort Bragg Fort Liberty earlier this month. In 2021, as a component of the crucial military policy measure, Congress decided to alter the base's name.
At the time, politicians argued that it was improper to rename a significant military post after a prominent Confederate general.
The decision to rename the base, according to Mr. DeSantis, is an affront to the veterans who have served at the facility.
He remarked, "They're proud of their service there. Both the name and the base are iconic.
Established in 1918, Fort Liberty now employs over 29,000 military personnel. The installation was known as Fort Bragg for a significant portion of its existence in honour of former Confederate leader Braxton Bragg.
Military historians have dubbed Bragg as one of the worst generals on either side of the Civil War due to his track record of losing more battles than he did winning them.
