In a statement last Saturday, Joe Biden asserted that Beijing's intentions were not fully realized when a Chinese surveillance balloon spent a week circling the United States in early February. According to the President, Beijing was left more "embarrassed" than they had intended. Before departing for Philadelphia, Biden explained to reporters that he did not believe their leadership entirely understood the situation at hand nor what the balloon contained. While not necessarily intentional, the outcome was undoubtedly more embarrassing than expected.
So, he said, "I'm expecting that over the coming months, I'll be meeting with [Chinese President] Xi [Jinping] again and talking about real disagreements we have, but also how there are places we can get along.
According to The New York Times, Antony Blinken arrived in China on Sunday, making history as the first secretary of state to travel there in the previous five years. He will meet with Qin Gang, his counterpart.
Due to the spy balloon incident, his trip was originally scheduled to take place in February. The military fired down the high-altitude balloon off the coast of South Carolina after it had been circling the continental United States for many days.
Beijing sharply criticized the decision to shoot down the balloon and pledged to take "countermeasures in line with the law against the relevant U.S. companies that endanger China's sovereignty and security" at the time.
Additionally, Republican senators criticized the Biden administration for allegedly failing to "confront China's brazen threats to America's security and sovereignty" and demanded that the administration provide a "public accounting" of its analysis of the Chinese spy balloon.
