Last year, Joe Biden declared that he would forgive up to $10,000 in student loan debt for the majority of borrowers and up to $20,000 for those who get Pell Grants. Republicans have sharply criticized the proposal, claiming that it unjustly favours high income earners at the expense of others with lower incomes and has come under judicial investigation.

According to Biden, "Congressional Republicans spearheaded an effort to pass a law opposing my Administration's plan to provide working and middle-class Americans up to $20,000 in student loan relief." "I'll continue to support people who work hard. I am vetoing this law because of this.

The Republican-led House approved the program cancellation plan in May by a vote of 218 to 203; the Senate adopted the measure earlier this month by a vote of 52 to 46. Biden tried to portray resistance to his plan as primarily political, but the legislation received backing from a number of moderate Democrats, allowing it to pass the upper house.

Many of the conservative justices expressed doubt about the administration's capacity to unilaterally eliminate substantial amounts of debt during the Supreme Court's hearings on the proposal.
