Police in Florida arrested a woman they claim was stealing at a mall and charged her with aggravated child negligence and arson after her car caught fire. An Oviedo police report from May 26 states that 24-year-old Alicia Moore parked her automobile in front of the Dillard's shop at the Oviedo Mall.
According to the AP, the investigation stated Moore abandoned the vehicle while the children were still inside. According to the complaint, Dillard's security caught Moore and another guy stealing from the store. Moore started leaving Dillard's after about an hour to find her car engulfed in flames, so she fled without the stuff.
Mall patrons spotted the burning vehicle and rushed to save the youngsters inside. The kids are now in Orlando Health's Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. The arrest document states that one youngster had "first degree burns on her face and ears." According to the story, Moore has been charged with severe child negligence for allegedly transporting minors who were unable to care for themselves.
Even though the police don't know what started the fire, they believe the kids would have escaped harm's way if Moore "was not being irresponsible." According to the arrest document, Moore was charged with arson since the fire broke out while she was allegedly committing a crime.
Official documents show that Moore was represented by the public defender's office. Late Saturday night, I wrote the office an email asking for feedback, but I didn't hear back from anybody right away. The bail set for Moore is $40,000. A public defender has filed a request seeking Moore's release without bond or a reduction of bail "to a fair and affordable sum" this Friday.
