An upstate New York lady claimed she would rather walk home, a distance of between three and four miles, than get into a car with her inebriated coworker after a night out. According to USA Today, "She didn't get very far." Madison Faltisco, 22, was reportedly murdered by her coworker after travelling less than a quarter of a mile in Clay soon after 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. Police are calling the incident a hit-and-run. According to Thomas Newton, a public information officer with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, Faltisco was crossing a road's shoulder when Joshua Schiano's car, which was driving, 23, swerved into her path.
As Schiano continued to drive, his automobile caught fire and exploded into flames after colliding with a post less than a mile distant, according to Newton. According to Syracuse.com, Schiano was brought to a hospital but did not sustain any significant wounds. Additionally, Newton said that despite knowing that he had hit something or someone prior to the collision, he did not tell authorities. According to Syracuse.com, a citizen contacted 911 at approximately 5 a.m. to report discovering an unconscious woman on the four-lane Oswego Road.
Investigators found that Faltisco had spent a few hours hitting the bars with Schiano, who she coworked with at a Clay restaurant, before declining his offer to drive her home because he was intoxicated. Her family is currently "living a nightmare, preparing to bury their beloved daughter and sister," according to a GoFundMe page. Second-degree manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, and fleeing the scene of a tragic accident were the three crimes to which Schiano entered a not guilty plea on Friday. According to CNN, he could spend up to 29 years in jail if found guilty of all three offences. In lieu of a $250,000 cash bail or a $500,000 bond, he is being detained at the Onondaga County Justice Centre, according to Newton.
