James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, announced on Monday that he would file contempt charges against FBI Director Christopher Wray as early as Thursday after the latter was given permission to review but not retain a June 2020 informant memo that claimed Joe Biden had participated in a foreign bribery scheme while serving as vice president.
Comer said the agency informed him the accusation originated from a reliable source, had not been refuted, and was still being investigated three years after it was made.
"Today, FBI officials reiterated again that the material included in the unclassified, FBI-generated record has not been disproven and that it is actively being used in an ongoing investigation," Comer added. The FBI has employed the confidential human source—a trusted, highly trustworthy informant—for years to offer information on then-Vice President Biden's involvement in a criminal bribery plot.
Comer claimed that even though the FBI had shown him the document, it did not comply with his demand since he had been forbidden from keeping it. He added, "We will immediately begin contempt of Congress procedures since the FBI once more refused to turn over the unclassified material to the possession of the House Oversight Committee at the briefing."
"Congress must conduct a thorough investigation because of the seriousness and complexity of the charges made in this record. Americans now expect answers, openness, and responsibility because they no longer believe the FBI can enforce the law impartially. For the sake of the American people, the Oversight Committee must adhere to the facts and see to it that the federal government is held responsible, he continued.
Despite having seen the subpoenaed document that day alleging Joe Biden was complicit in a bribery plot, he will begin the process of filing congressional contempt charges against FBI Director Christopher Wray.
He noted that Wray's contempt proceedings will start as soon as Thursday.
When then-Vice President Biden reportedly participated in a $5 million pay-to-play criminal plot with a foreign individual, Comer served the FBI with an informant form.
Although the FBI first stated that Comer may see the document at its headquarters, he was subsequently able to see it in person on Capitol Hill. Comer said that despite the accommodation, the FBI is still ignoring his subpoena to provide the material to the committee.
