Both Jake Tapper of CNN and Rachel Maddow of MSNBC offered an odd justification for skipping a live event where Donald J. Trump, the former president of the United States, defended himself after pleading "not guilty" to federal charges on Tuesday.
He could make a "untrue" statement. No, I mean it. Watch:
As he did the evening of his initial arraignment on criminal charges, the former president Trump has just started making public statements, Maddow observed. At the time of his arrest in April, the state of New York had filed 34 criminal charges against him. He is speaking once again tonight, following his arrest on federal criminal charges, to an audience of his fans who have assembled for a campaign fundraiser at his New Jersey golf club and summer residence.
She said, "We knew going into this that he was planning to make these things. "We anticipate that tonight's pre-fundraiser statements will essentially be a Trump campaign address once more. We do not expect to broadcast these comments live as a result. As we have already stated, it costs us as a news institution to intentionally disseminate false information in certain situations.
In an oddly uncoordinated response to the live Trump event, Jake Tapper stated nearly the same thing on CNN.
According to Tapper, "Trump says a lot of things that are not factual and occasionally might be harmful, so we're not covering [his] statements live."
That undoubtedly establishes a standard for political news coverage. Because, contrary to what Maddow and Tapper would have their viewers think, only Donald Trump and his followers have ever lied in office. Right.
But given that Trump has been given the freedom to publicly discuss his defence, their decision to not broadcast the live event is even more questionable from a journalistic perspective. It is after all election season, and he is being investigated by a candidate for the presidency of the United States whose own controversy involving "secret materials" is even worse than Donald Trump's.
Since many years ago, notably during the Trump administration and especially in relation to the Russia hoax, MSNBC and CNN have purposefully disseminated inaccurate information.
Beyond that, broadcasting a live political event is practically without consequences. It is a journalist's responsibility to give balance with real facts if one thinks that statements made were untrue.
After all day attacking him with a one-sided narrative that implies he is guilty and a threat to national security, there is no justifiable reason to withhold the presidential candidate's defence from the audience, especially when you let the current U.S. president and other Democratic political figures off the hook without serious criticism.
It is just another illustration of how CNN and MSNBC's biased commentary that passes for news does a terrible disservice to the American people. Regardless of their political party or ideological stance, journalists demand accountability from the wealthy and powerful. However, the woke mainstream media frequently refuses to do that.
