Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami, filed the necessary papers on Wednesday to run for president in the Republican primary in 2024, taking on fellow Floridian Gov. Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump, who spends much of his time in the Sunshine State.
The primary field is already crowded due to Suarez's entry, which also includes former governors Nikki Haley of South Carolina, Chris Christie of New Jersey, and Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, senator from South Carolina Tim Scott, former vice president Mike Pence, former governor of North Dakota Doug Bergum, radio host Larry Elder, and tech tycoon Vivek Ramaswamy.
The city of Miami, which sought to position itself as an alternative to Silicon Valley, has made significant attempts to attract IT businesses during the second term of the mayor, according to the Associated Press.
Suarez has sought to improve the party's reputation among members of his demographic as the sole Hispanic in the primary race. Recently, the region has tended to lean Republican, and Miami-Dade County, which contains the city, enthusiastically supported Governor Ron DeSantis in his bid for reelection in 2022. With 78.6% of the vote, Suarez, for his part, easily won reelection in 2021.
According to reports, his name has been mentioned as a prospective vice presidential contender.
Suarez's entry for the race coincides with the same week Donald Trump entered a not-guilty plea during his arraignment on federal charges in a Miami courtroom.
