Two loaded weapons were discovered in Jack Jones' carry-on luggage, according to federal investigators, and he was taken into custody at Boston Logan International Airport that evening. Jones is a cornerback for the New England Patriots.
The two weapons were found by TSA personnel while conducting a "regular X-ray scan" of Jones' luggage, the agency stated in a statement sent to CBS News. Jones, 25, was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles at the time.
TSA, which also sent CBS News a picture of the firearms discovered, said that Massachusetts State Police had questioned him and then detained him at the airport.
Jones was charged with two state counts of carrying a loaded firearm while carrying a concealed weapon in a secured area of an airport, ammunition possession without a firearm identification card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device, according to state police, who confirmed this to CBS News.
The Patriots informed CBS Boston about the arrest and said in a statement that they were "processing gathering more information and will not be commenting more at this time."
According to state police, Jones was taken into custody on a $50,000 bond and will be tried the following week.
When the Patriots chose Jones in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he had just finished his rookie season. Last season, he played in 13 games and had 30 tackles in addition to two interceptions.
