Facebook Files Unveiled: White House Collaboration with Silicon Valley Censors on Covid-19 Content Revealed

Rep. Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, published On Friday, part two of the "Facebook Files" will reveal additional White House cooperation with Silicon Valley censors regarding coronavirus content, including requests to remove posts about the potential side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine even if the information was accurate.

According to documents, the Biden administration compelled Facebook to remove comments that were critical of vaccines that the White House had supported. Jordan stated on Twitter that the effort also included a public and covert campaign to persuade Facebook to aggressively police vaccine-related content, including TRUE information.

President Joe Biden alleged that Facebook and other Big Tech platforms were "killing people" in July 2021 by not removing more posts questioning vaccinations.

First to break the news about the second batch of "Facebook Files" was The Wall Street Journal.

According to internal documents, Facebook employees initially "bristled" at the president's accusations and criticized the government's definition of misinformation as being "completely unclear."

An employee whose name has been redacted in the public records wrote, "It also seems like when the vaccination campaign isn't going as hoped, it's convenient for them to blame us."

Another unidentified person in the email thread described the situation as "frustrating" and said that it appeared to be a political battle that wasn't entirely based on facts.

However, a pressure campaign from the White House persuaded senior leadership to reevaluate Facebook's Covid-19 censorship program after high-level meetings with the company's president of global affairs and the then-Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg.

One internal communication stated that "criticism of our approach from the US administration" was the reason for the change and that "Leadership asked... to brainstorm some additional policy levers we can pull to be more aggressive against Covid and vaccine misinformation."

The administration reportedly even ordered Facebook to censor "humorous or satirical content that suggests the vaccine isn't safe," according to records. The White House also requested that Facebook censor any unfavorable information about the side effects of vaccinations, even if the information were accurate.

Internal company documents stated that "The Surgeon General wants us to remove true information about side effects."

On Thursday, Rep. Jordan, the head of the House Judiciary Committee and the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, released the first installment of the "Facebook Files." According to emails, the White House pressed Facebook to stop posting videos of former Fox News prime-time anchor Tucker Carlson, who was fired from the network in April.

In Missouri v. Biden, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction on July 4 that temporarily prohibited the Biden administration from working with tech giants to put in place a censorship regime. To allow censorship to continue while the case is on appeal, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted the administration's request to temporarily stay the injunction.
