According to former Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), Gov. Ron DeSantis is running a "copycat campaign," which is why he cannot defeat former President Donald Trump in the GOP presidential primary.

DeSantis is the Republican front-runner's closest challenger in the crowded field, but the two-term governor of Florida trails Trump by an average of more than 32 points, per Real Clear Politics.

Political analysts and pundits believe that DeSantis' inability to appeal to the conservative base and criticize Trump will be the downfall of his presidential campaign.

Ron DeSantis has run a copycat campaign of Donald Trump, so he isn't gaining traction in the Republican primary, at least not as much as he would like, according to Curbelo. By the way, in 2018, this was how he entered the governor's mansion. He exactly followed the Trump playbook. This year's issue is that Trump is obstructing him. It is extremely difficult to turn someone's playbook against him.

DeSantis should concentrate more on winning the Florida state midterm elections in 2022, according to Curbelo, and try to distinguish his immigration policy from that of Trump.

They believe that by copying Trump, they can gain Trump's support. Additionally, that's just not how things operate, he continued. "He's competing with Trump on immigration. That's just not a feasible objective. Regarding immigration, Donald Trump enjoys high levels of credibility among Republican primary voters. And perhaps DeSantis should try to justify why a different strategy would be better and more successful in resolving the immigration issue in our nation.
