Mothers who support Ron DeSantis acknowledged that the Republican governor's position against abortions in Florida after six weeks of pregnancy will hurt his chances of winning over voters nationwide.
Elle Reeve, a CNN correspondent, spoke with these women about the unofficial Twitter group they started to discuss what they like about DeSantis. The topic shifted from DeSantis' rejection of lockdown policies from the Covid era to the culture war issues he supported during his presidential campaign.
One of the women Reeve spoke with, Jennifer Sey, acknowledged that DeSantis' campaign against "wokeness" is "a little bit" detracting from his more important message. Sey shifted the conversation away from DeSantis' anti-transgender legislation and back to the law he signed outlawing the majority of abortions in Florida after six weeks of pregnancy.
Sey said, "I'm more worried about [that]." "I think I would be less concerned if he made it clear that he's a states rights person and that he's not looking to sort of pass a national law in this regard."
Another supporter of DeSantis, Julie Hamill, voiced similar worries that the ban wouldn't help DeSantis with female voters: I believe that is risky. I am unable to support that, and I believe that his presidential campaign will suffer as a result. That, in my opinion, could be a significant barrier to bringing in moderate women.
