In light of claims that the Biden family received $10 million as part of a bribery scheme involving a Ukrainian national, top congressional Republicans are investigating who gave President Joe Biden's company, CelticCapri Corp., nearly $10 million in 2017.
The Associated Press reported in 2019 that Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, saw a rise in their income from $400,000 in 2016, Biden's final full year as vice president, to $11 million in 2017.
Eli Crane, a Republican from Arizona, tweeted earlier this month, "It would shock no one in this town if Joe Biden received millions from selling out the country in a bribery scheme and then hid that money in shady shell companies."
For their work after leaving the White House, the Bidens have used CelticCapri Corp. According to the wire service, the majority of the Bidens' income came from his memoir, "Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose."
The tax return has come under renewed scrutiny after it was made public earlier this year that an FBI informant claimed that in 2017, two members of the Biden family received $10 million in payment in exchange for using their influence to get then-Ukrainian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin fired from his position of investigation into the Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings, where Hunter Biden worked.
In March 2016, Shokin was let go for, according to Obama administration officials, failing to look into Ukrainian corruption.
The Biden 2024 campaign fundraising page has since taken the place of the link to the financial disclosures that Biden's campaign had previously made available online. However, Bob Anderson, a writer for The Federalist, pointed out that the campaign only provided individual returns and none pertaining to any S-corporation returns, such as those for CelticCapri Corp.
Although "Promise Me, Dad" had sold more than 300,000 copies as of 2019, Anderson claimed that Biden would have only made about $800,000 using the typical blended royalty rate of 7.5% for paperback sales and 15% for hardcover sales. As a result, millions of dollars in income are still unaccounted for.
Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, said earlier this month on an episode of his podcast, "Verdict with Ted Cruz," "You're looking at a tax return that has $10 million in cash that came from a mystery source."
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., who has devoted countless hours to looking into the corruption allegations against the Biden family, stated last week that he believes the federal government is also corrupt.
"I've been saying there's a bigger story than the corruption in the Biden family for years. There is widespread corruption both in our federal agencies and in the media, he tweeted. "More people need to come forward and tell us the truth as whistleblowers. The only way to regain credibility and integrity is to do that.
