On Saturday, a group of Just Stop Oil protesters disrupted a Pride parade in London for a short period of time, causing a rift between the two ideologically steadfast groups.
Seven protesters, most of whom appeared to be teenagers, are seen on video lying down in front of a double-decker bus sponsored by Coca-Cola and sporting Pride flags and rainbow-colored decorations. The Just Stop Oil protesters painted the road with black and white paint before squatting down in front of the bus while also sporting rainbow-colored outfits and Pride flag capes.
As the large parade came to an abrupt stop, the protesters chanted "just stop oil."
Pride London's decision to accept sponsorships from "high-polluting industries" angered environmentalists, which led to the event's closure.
In recent years, climate protesters have developed a reputation for obstructing traffic, but in this case, the disruption was brief. Seven people were detained for public nuisance offenses after law enforcement intervened quickly and forcibly removed the protesters from the road, according to the police.
The LGBTQ+ community is "embarrassed by these partnerships at a time when a large portion of the cultural world is rejecting ties to these toxic industries," the organization claimed. Waving rainbow flags while hastening social collapse, high-polluting industries and the banks that fund them now view Pride as a helpful tool for sanitizing their reputations.
The Just Stop Oil protest, which appeared to drive a wedge between the generally overlapping ideologies, elicited conflicting reactions from Pride London attendees. Yes, we must evict major oil companies from Pride. The climate crisis is something queer people must seriously consider. Threatening a Pride event, however, when so many of us are currently being attacked, is not the right move. One LGBT activist wrote, "We need to unite, not fight each other.
As the Just Stop Oil protesters were led away, numerous parade goers applauded as well. Before the parade resumed, the protest had ultimately lasted for about 15 minutes.
