According to court documents released on Thursday, Special counsel Jack Smith has charged Carlos De Oliveira as a third defendant in the Donald Trump case involving classified documents. Paula Reid of CNN broke the news of the new development first.
Trump, the former president and Republican front-runner for president in 2024, and Walt Nauta, a longtime personal assistant, were each charged with federal offenses relating to the storage and handling of classified documents.
After the Justice Department initially served a subpoena on Trump for classified documents in May of last year, "De Oliveira was the maintenance worker who helped Nauta move boxes of classified documents around Mar-a-Lago," according to CNN.
De Oliveira's name has previously come up in connection with the case because surveillance footage in the DOJ's possession allegedly captured him "moving document boxes around the resort" before Trump's legal team searched Mar-a-Lago. Following the search, Trump's attorneys informed authorities in a certified letter that the former president had no additional documents in his possession, but this turned out to be untrue.
Reid told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the indictment against De Oliveira was not included in the court documents that were made public, only that he had been added as a defendant.
