Three prominent House Republican investigators have formally requested Attorney General Merrick Garland to furnish them with documents pertaining to the selection of Special Counsel David Weiss. They assert that the Justice Department has granted Hunter Biden preferential treatment, affording him exemptions from more severe penalties in relation to tax and other criminal offenses.

According to a joint statement by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, the Department hindered experienced investigators and impeded their ability to impartially pursue the truth during the investigation.

The Department reached an unusual plea agreement with Hunter Biden following his attorneys' threat to subpoena President Biden as a witness in the case. The appointment of a special counsel has been made to an individual who supervised the investigation's irregularities, previously denied the need for special counsel status, and was accountable for the plea agreement that failed in court and is widely regarded as a source of embarrassment for the Department. We have reservations regarding the appointment of Mr. Weiss as special counsel due to his track record in leading this investigation.

The Committees cautioned that, due to the gravity of these matters, they anticipate unimpeded collaboration with our oversight efforts from both you and the Department.

Weiss, as the former U.S. Attorney for Delaware, supervised the lengthy investigation into the current first son. In that particular case, two IRS agents alleged political interference from Biden-appointed officials and questioned Weiss's authority to pursue charges beyond his jurisdiction, contradicting Garland's claims.

It is additionally claimed that Weiss had previously requested special counsel status, which was denied by Garland, after the D.C. U.S. Attorney declined to collaborate with Weiss on charges in his jurisdiction.

The committee stated that Hunter Biden received preferential treatment not granted to other individuals under the supervision of U.S. Attorney David Weiss. What reasons do Americans have to believe in the potential for change with Weiss serving as special counsel?

Weiss's appointment drew attention because of the allegations surrounding the case and his handling of it. Additionally, there was concern about the failure of Attorney General Garland to adhere to DOJ regulations, which stipulate that a special counsel should be selected from outside the government.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, has advocated for the removal of Weiss. There is a requirement for an independent special counsel in this particular case. Graham expressed the need to remove Mr. Weiss from the Hunter Biden investigation in late August. This situation has been severely mishandled. I have been advocating for a fresh perspective on this case for an extended period of time. The Weiss investigative team is currently under a significant cloud, which can only be dispelled by the appointment of a new independent special counsel.
