In a recent development, Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, has made a call for the expulsion of Representative Matt Gaetz from the House Republican Conference. Gingrich alleges that Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, is engaging in actions that violate conference rules in order to pursue an agenda against Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who represents California.

On Monday, Representative Gaetz took action by filing a motion to vacate, a decision he had previously hinted at. As a result, House Minority Leader McCarthy was compelled to schedule a vote on the motion within a timeframe of two legislative days.

Gaetz was able to gather enough votes to secure McCarthy's ouster due to the House Republican's narrow majority. During the Tuesday vote, the motion to vacate was successful, as it received the support of a majority of House members. The final tally was 216 to 210, with eight Republicans joining Democratic representatives who were directed by their conference leadership to vote in favor of removing McCarthy from his position.

In an op-ed for the Washington Post, Gingrich expressed his belief that Gaetz "should be expelled from the House Republican Conference," as per Gingrich's perspective.

The former speaker provided a justification for his request by referring to a specific rule within the House Republican Conference. This rule states that the ability to bring a motion to vacate should only be granted if the Republican Conference agrees, in order to prevent Democrats from having the power to select the Speaker.

In January, certain concessions were made by McCarthy in order to secure enough votes for the speakership. As a result, the threshold for forcing a vote on a motion to vacate was revised, allowing a single member to initiate the process. In his writing, Gingrich emphasizes that the agreement established upon McCarthy assuming the role of speaker does not override the rules set by the conference. In order for Gaetz to secure his position, he must obtain the support of a majority of the conference.

In recounting his own credibility on the matter, Newt Gingrich reflected on his experiences as speaker and highlighted his opposition to the GOP establishment. According to his statement, he claimed that his act of rebellion was a reflection of the prevailing opinion held by the majority of the caucus during that period.

According to the statement, Gaetz is accused of disregarding the rules in order to gain personal attention and raise funds. In addition, he asserted that the Florida representative is undermining the House GOP's capacity to effectively govern, labeling him as someone who opposes the principles of the Republican party.
