Gov. Gavin Newsom has chosen political strategist Laphonza Butler to replace late Senator Dianne Feinstein, reports. Butler, a labor leader and president of EMILY’s List (the -self-described “nation’s largest resource for electing Democratic women pro-choice to office”) is based in California. Newsom passed over Reps. Adam Schiff, Barbara Lee and Katie Porter who were the frontrunners to take Feinstein's place in next year's elections.

Newsom's office confirmed to the Washington Examiner on Sunday that there will not be a "precondition" for this replacement. Feinstein’s term is scheduled to expire in 2024. Newsom has long indicated he only wanted an interim replacement. Newsom's office told the Washington Examiner that it will not "precondition" the replacement to be in the Senate for a limited time. This could make Butler a potential roadblock to Schiff, Lee and Porter's chances of winning the election.

Butler shared: "I am saddened by the news of Senator @DianneFeinstein's passing." Not only was she an icon in the Senate but also a legend for women across the nation. The legacy of her achievements and contributions will never be forgotten. I am praying for her family. "She will be greatly missed."

Newsom, according to reports, acted quickly in order to reach a conclusion as Democrats had a tenuous 51-49 Senate advantage. California Democrat, Newsom likely saw that the Democratic vote was essential to averting a shutdown of the government.

The decision is unlikely to change the plans of Schiff, Lee or Porter for 2024. If Butler accepts Newsom's nomination, it will be up to her whether she wants run as an incumbent for the full Senate term alongside the other three.
