The scheduled joint interview involving three Republican lawmakers competing for the position of House speaker has been canceled due to the candidates' decision to deviate from the televised event. This choice was made in response to the criticism they faced within the GOP.

The event hosted by Fox News, which was originally planned to include House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Rep. Jim Jordan, and Rep. Kevin Hern, has been canceled. This information has been confirmed by Mr. Scalise's office.

The first member of the trio to withdraw from the event was Mr. Hern, an Oklahoma Republican. He expressed his belief that a televised joint interview was not an appropriate platform for engaging in the competition for the gavel.

As of now, I have yet to finalize my decision regarding my candidacy for the position of speaker. However, there is one aspect that I am certain about. Mr. Hern made it clear that he would not be taking part in the televised debate, as he stated on X. The decision should be made collectively as a conference rather than being influenced by television. A family discussion is needed within the Republican conference.

The cancellation of the event occurred in the aftermath of the significant removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy from his position as speaker earlier this week. The candidate forum for the Republican conference has been scheduled by Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry of North Carolina. It is anticipated that the election to select the nominee who will replace Mr. McCarthy will take place on Wednesday.

Mr. McHenry refrained from providing a specific timeline for the floor vote on the speaker, adopting a cautious approach. During a conversation with reporters at the Capitol on Friday morning, he indicated that any updates regarding the next steps would likely be shared following the scheduled conference meetings scheduled for the upcoming week.

Mr. Scalise has held a prominent position in House GOP leadership for over ten years and has gained significant popularity. Additionally, he has established himself as a highly successful fundraiser. Over the course of the past ten years, the second-ranking Republican member in the House of Representatives has successfully amassed a staggering $170 million in funds to support fellow candidates from the Grand Old Party (GOP).

Mr. Jordan, hailing from Ohio, holds the esteemed position of being a co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, a group known for its staunch conservative ideology. Additionally, he serves as the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, a significant role within the legislative body. The lawmaker, although not as skilled at fundraising as Mr. Scalise, has gained popularity among the House's most conservative members. These members frequently oppose Mr. McCarthy's agenda. One such member is Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who orchestrated the coup to oust Mr. McCarthy from the speakership.

The chair of the Republican Study Committee, Mr. Hern, leads the largest caucus within the GOP conference. This committee is known for its significant size, with over 150 members representing various conservative viewpoints. The candidate has strategically presented his background as a businessman to enhance his appeal and promote his candidacy.

According to the latest whip count, approximately 25% of the conference has expressed their support for a candidate in the race.

The fractured GOP conference does not have a clear favorite candidate. An endorsement from former President Donald Trump has the potential to influence additional lawmakers to lend their support to Mr. Jordan.
