In the month of November, Border Patrol officers encountered a total of 17 individuals who were found to be on the FBI's terror watch list. These individuals were attempting to enter the United States illegally, specifically outside of the established port of entry located on the southern border.

According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the 17 individuals were apprehended by law enforcement agents upon their entry into the United States and subsequently underwent processing. In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of individuals identified as terrorists who have been apprehended while attempting to enter the United States through the southern border, specifically outside of designated ports of entry. This concerning trend reached a new peak in Financial Year 2023, with a record-breaking 169 known terrorists detected during this period.

In FY 2023, there has been a notable increase in the number of individuals of interest on the watch list who have been making attempts to enter the United States through ports of entry on either the northern or southern border. Specifically, a record-breaking total of 564 individuals have been detected at these ports.

In the previous month, a total of 17 individuals were apprehended. These individuals contributed to the overall count of 13 entries made by individuals who were already on the watch list. These entries occurred outside of a designated port of entry during the month of October. Since the start of the fiscal year 2024 in October, an additional 49 individuals have been apprehended while attempting to enter the United States through a port of entry.

The FBI's Terrorist Screening Center is responsible for maintaining a comprehensive federal dataset. This dataset contains crucial identifying information pertaining to both known and suspected terrorists, as well as terrorist groups. Additionally, the dataset also includes information about the affiliates associated with these individuals and groups.

According to the CBP website, it is stated that encounters with individuals who are on the watchlist at our borders are infrequent. This highlights the crucial work performed by CBP Agents and Officers on a daily basis at the forefront of border security.

The rise in the number of individuals on the terror watch list who are making attempts to enter the United States is a matter of concern. It is important to note that the figures being discussed only pertain to those individuals who have been processed by the Border Patrol. It is worth considering that there is a chance that some individuals mentioned on the list may have made attempts to enter a certain area without being detected by law enforcement. These individuals can be categorized as part of a larger group known as "gotaways," who manage to successfully cross the border due to its permeable nature and limited resources allocated for border security.

The figures of the terror watch list have been brought to attention amidst growing concerns expressed by Members of Congress. These concerns revolve around the increased possibility of terrorists entering the United States, which has been heightened following the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th and the subsequent war that ensued.
