If the GOP debate in Alabama on Wednesday left you feeling let down, there will be more debates in the upcoming year. CNN said on Thursday that it would hold two Republican debates in the early primary states: one at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, on January 10, and another at St. Anselm College in Goffstown, New Hampshire, on January 21.
The Iowa caucus is only five days away from the Jan. 10 debate, according to the New York Times, while the New Hampshire primary is two days away from the Jan. 21 debate.
Politico reports that the Republican National Committee, which approved the previous four debates we saw, has not approved the current ones. The publication reports that campaigns have expressed dissatisfaction with an RNC regulation that prohibits candidates from participating in future approved debates if they participate in an unapproved one. However, rumors have it that the RNC will meet on Friday to perhaps repeal this rule.
Politico examined CNN's requirements and found that former President Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley meet the qualifications for the Iowa debate, but only Trump and Haley have so far for the New Hampshire debate. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy could still qualify for both debates.
