Campbell County Middle School principal, Jason Smith, made a compassionate decision that had a profound impact on a troubled student's life. He generously welcomed her into his home, altering the course of her future.

The sequence of events unfolded when Raven Whitaker-Smith, an 11-year-old, was summoned to Smith's office following an incident that occurred during lunch. A suspension was issued to Raven after she threw yogurt at one of her classmates. Unbeknownst to all, this particular incident would set in motion an exceptional voyage characterized by acts of empathy and solidarity.

Raven recounted an incident where she ended up in the principal's office after instigating a food fight in the cafeteria. During a conversation with the principal, I was posed with a hypothetical scenario in which I was asked whether I would initiate a food fight while dining with my family. Upon hearing my unexpected revelation about not having a family, the individual in question expressed remorse and admitted to feeling a profound sense of guilt. During my childhood, I resided at Holly Hill as a foster child. After engaging in that conversation, he proceeded to have a discussion with his wife, and as a result, significant events unfolded that would later become part of the past.

Smith, motivated by his deep sense of empathy, returned to his residence and engaged in a thoughtful conversation with his wife, Marybeth, regarding the situation at hand. After careful deliberation, the couple made the decision to extend their love and hospitality to Raven, embracing her as a member of their family through foster care.

My mom and he underwent training and successfully obtained certification as foster parents through DCCH Center. Their primary objective was to provide foster care for me. Raven explained that due to their inability to conceive, the couple was unable to have children of their own. However, on that particular day, something Raven said resonated deeply with them, leading them to believe that Raven was the missing piece their family had been longing for. The individual's mother has expressed that she had always harbored doubts and uncertainties regarding her inability to conceive children until the moment she encountered the person speaking.

In June 2015, Raven made the decision to move in with the Smiths. Raven, who was a high school freshman at the time, was officially adopted by the Smiths on November 3, 2017.

Raven, a student at the University of Kentucky, is currently in their junior year pursuing a degree in social work.

If someone had informed my 11-year-old self that I would reach the status of a junior in college, I would have found it utterly amusing and dismissed the idea entirely. In an essay, Raven expressed that her life underwent a significant transformation as a result of being in foster care. The experience of being fostered by a wonderful set of parents had a significant impact on my life. Although it did not completely erase the trauma I had endured, it created an environment where I was able to develop essential skills to navigate through it. Moreover, my foster parents played a crucial role in instilling a sense of self-belief within me and offering hope to a child who had previously felt hopeless.

During an interview with Good Morning America, Jason Smith expressed his strong belief that there are no inherently bad children. Children's development and success are greatly influenced by their environment and the individuals responsible for their upbringing. Unfortunately, some children may not receive the necessary care and guidance. However, when provided with the appropriate opportunities and supported with love and affection, all children have the potential to achieve success.
