ABC News has decided to cancel its Republican presidential primary debate in New Hampshire on Thursday. This decision comes after Nikki Haley expressed her unwillingness to participate in any more debates unless Donald Trump is present.
"We had planned to hold a debate following the Iowa caucuses, but we were aware that this would depend on the candidates and the results of the race," a representative from ABC News informed CNBC. "Due to certain circumstances, despite our commitment to comprehensive election coverage, ABC News and WMUR-TV have decided not to proceed with the Republican presidential primary debate in New Hampshire scheduled for Thursday."
Trump emerged as the clear winner in the Iowa Caucus, marking a significant milestone in the race for the 2024 presidential nomination. Haley achieved a respectable third place in Iowa, garnering 19.1% of the vote. On Tuesday, Haley criticized Trump for avoiding the debates.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized Haley for avoiding difficult inquiries regarding her reported interactions with Boeing during her time as governor of South Carolina.
"It is evident that her intention is not to run for the nomination, but rather to run for the position of Trump's VP," DeSantis shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday. "I will not disregard the voters of New Hampshire like Nikki Haley and Donald Trump did. I intend to fulfill my commitments." The upcoming GOP primary debate is set to take place on Thursday, just a few days ahead of the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 23. Recent polls show that Haley is currently trailing Trump in the state, with some polls indicating a margin as small as 7 points.
