US President Biden Affirms Stance: No Support for Taiwan's Independence

President Joe Biden made it clear on Saturday that the United States does not support Taiwan's independence, following the country's election of Lai Ching-te as its new president. As reported by Politico, Lai has expressed support for Taiwanese independence and has encountered significant resistance from China, who characterized the election as a decision between conflict and harmony. 

The Biden administration has provided further clarification, emphasizing the importance of peaceful resolution of differences between China and Taiwan, while reiterating its stance against supporting an independent Taiwan. 



Several US officials expressed their congratulations to Lia on his victory through X. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed his congratulations to Dr. Lai Ching-te for his successful win in Taiwan's presidential election. He expressed his congratulations to the people of Taiwan for their active participation in the recent elections, which showcased the robustness of their democratic system.

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his congratulations to Lai and expressed his satisfaction with the flourishing of democracy among the Taiwanese people. He added, "The United States is looking forward to collaborating with President-elect Lai and further strengthening the already robust partnership we have had with President Tsai."

Johnson additionally stated his intention to request House leaders to head a delegation to Taipei after Lai's inauguration in May. He expressed optimism that the United States and Taiwan would work together to advance the values of freedom, opportunity, and security for like-minded nations and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

In May 2022, President Biden made a clear declaration that the United States would provide military defense to Taiwan in the event of any territorial aggression from China. "That's the promise we made," he stated. 

"That is the promise we have made. Let's take a closer look. Let me explain the situation: we fully support the One China policy, and we have not only agreed to it but also signed all the related agreements," Biden explained. "However, the notion of forcibly acquiring it is simply not suitable." The event will have significant consequences for the entire region, resembling the situation that unfolded in Ukraine. And thus, it is a weight that is even more formidable.

Following President Biden's admission, the White House staff clarified that he was simply restating the United States' commitment to support Taiwan's defense capabilities, as outlined in the Taiwan Relations Act. This commitment is similar to the assistance provided to Ukraine.
