Soon after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) announced he was out from the presidential race and supporting GOP front-runner Donald Trump, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) wasted no time in making fun of the former governor. "All Ron DeSantis merchandise is on fire today!" In reaction to a journalist's article about DeSantis's decision, Newsom made a post on X.

Days before the New Hampshire primary, on Sunday, the governor of Florida said in a video uploaded on X that he was withdrawing from the race. Everyone put in equal effort, and we gave it our best on the field. After finishing in second place in Iowa, we've prayed and thought carefully about our next steps," DeSantis said. He then endorsed Trump and denounced Nikki Haley, the sole remaining opponent in the GOP field.

DeSantis is a "very capable person," according to Trump, and the former president's staff expressed their gratitude for the governor's support.

For months, Newsom and DeSantis have been at odds in public; their debate at the end of last year may have been the climax of their arguments. Due to the governors' conflicts, there is now a "red state vs. blue state" race in which DeSantis criticizes Newsom for policies that he considers to be too progressive, while Newsom uses every setback DeSantis has throughout the campaign to make fun of his Republican opponent.

Many people, including DeSantis, conjectured that Newsom was conducting a covert presidential campaign due to his overseas trips, public persona, and support of President Joe Biden's policies. But Newsom hasn't announced his candidacy for president yet; he may hold off until 2028. Tuesday is the primary in New Hampshire, where Trump and Haley will compete in a match that might either indicate that Haley can challenge Trump or spell disaster for her campaign.
