Previously seen as the most formidable opponent of former President Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced his withdrawal from the Republican presidential primary on Sunday, capping an incredible ascent and decline for the contender.

In addition, he supported Trump in this video message.

After winning handily to reelection as governor of Florida in the previous year's midterm elections, DeSantis was seen as the most likely Trump opponent. His win was a stark contrast to the performances of other Republicans around the nation, many of whom had received Trump's endorsement.

The governor of Florida announced his formal candidacy in May with the backing of his super PAC and a handful of seasoned GOP campaign veterans.

However, DeSantis was unable to make headway against his former political friend, Trump. Technical difficulties with the Twitter Spaces debut gave DeSantis's campaign a rough start. Additionally, the governor was criticized for his demeanor throughout the campaign, with some calling him uncomfortable.

Despite finishing second in Monday's Iowa caucuses, he was still far behind Trump, receiving just 21% of the vote to Trump's 51%. Many predicted he would perform badly in New Hampshire, where the former president's most formidable opponent is believed to be former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley (R).
