Following Monday night's Iowa caucuses, Republican presidential hopefuls Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis delivered speeches that conveyed the perception of a closely contested race among the three contenders. Despite former President Donald Trump's victory in the caucuses, both Haley and DeSantis resolutely expressed their commitment to continue their campaigns in South Carolina and New Hampshire.
"It's safe to say that Iowa turned this Republican primary into a two-person contest tonight, given our performance in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and other states," Haley said.
Following the results, DeSantis addressed his supporters, saying, "They were just so excited about the fact that they were predicting that we wouldn't be able to get our ticket punched here out of Iowa, but I can tell you because of your support, in spite of all that they threw at us, everyone against us, we got our ticket punched out of Iowa."
These are the statements of two candidates who, to the ignorant spectator, either won or came in very close second. But with the previous president receiving more than 50% of the vote, DeSantis and Haley fell behind Trump by thirty points. Haley failed to meet the 20% mark.
Right now, Haley and DeSantis are not conducting serious campaigns. While other states have their elections, they are enjoying the illusion that they can advance beyond Iowa and defeat Trump for the nomination.
Haley has a good chance of defeating Trump in New Hampshire, but in her home state of South Carolina, where Trump often has a 50% approval rating, she is 30 points behind the former president in the polls. Regarding DeSantis, he just doesn't have a chance to even come close to repeating his far-off second-place result in Iowa in any other state.
If the results of Iowa and the polls for the next several states are any indicator, Trump is on track to secure a majority of delegates, which is the need to win the Republican nominee, before the month of April even arrives.
By making fanciful remarks like a "two-person race" or a "ticket punched out of Iowa," DeSantis and Haley are urging their contributors and supporters to keep following them down a road that will ultimately lead to their demise while also fooling themselves. They would quit lying to their fans and pull out if they still had any decency.
