Hours before the US and UK launched an attack on rebel sites, the Houthi commander in Yemen issued a warning stating that American strikes would only strengthen their assaults in the Red Sea. The Houthis' attempted attack was reportedly foiled by American and British warships. (Source: Reuters)

The Yemeni leader continued, "We are more determined to target ships linked to Israel, and we will not back down from that," according to Reuters,.

Using over a hundred precision-guided missiles, the United States and the United Kingdom struck sixty Houthi targets in sixteen different areas of Yemen later that night, according to the US.

What effect, if any, the attacks have had on the Houthi militant capacity and capacity to carry out al-threats Houthi's is unclear at this time. More strikes would probably be required to curtail its assaults in the Red Sea, according to a military strategist who recently spoke with Business Insider.

In retaliation for Israel's airstrikes and ground invasion of Gaza, the rebel group—which has long had Iranian backing—has launched a slew of assaults on commercial ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis, according to a December report by Human Rights Watch, have failed to provide proof linking at least five of the ships destroyed to Israel.

As frightened maritime behemoths divert their wares from the Red Sea, the assaults have wreaked havoc on global commerce. As part of a coalition defending regional maritime lanes, the United States and the United Kingdom had previously given the Houthis an ultimatum, warning that the rebels would suffer repercussions for their ongoing aggression.

The Houthis launched a major attack using drones and missiles, prompting the United States and the United Kingdom to retaliate with targeted strikes. The airstrikes took place in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, in response to what Reuters referred to as "American-Zionist-British aggression."
