On Sunday, the Pentagon released the identities of the three American military personnel who tragically lost their lives in an unmanned aerial drone strike on a northeast Jordanian station.
Tragically, three service members—Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia—passed away on January 28, 2024, in Jordan, according to a news agency. As the Pentagon put it, "a one-way unmanned aerial system (OWUAS) struck their container housing units" and the assault ended.
According to Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, who spoke to reporters on Monday, the assault was distinct from previous assaults due to the location and time of day—specifically, in living quarters and at "quite early dawn."
"When the drone struck, many were really in bed," she said.
Additionally, Singh said that a group supported by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was responsible for the drone strike. What the United States has acknowledged is that these organizations are active in both Iraq and Syria. She claimed that Kataib Hezbollah was behind the strike, but that they had not yet made a final determination. She went on to say that U.S. troops will retaliate "at a time and location of their choice."
According to the department, they are now investigating the assault. A senior American official later on Monday said that, based on initial findings, the assault drone seems to have been an Iranian "kind of Shahed drone"—the same kind of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that Iran has been supplying to Russia.
Sunday night, U.S. Central Command reported at least 34 injuries; but, according to Singh on Monday, the figure has already risen to more over 40. Several of the injured military men were in severe condition, but all eight were reportedly stable after being evacuated, according to a defense official who spoke to CBS News.
The drone attack occurred in the early hours of the morning as the wounded and slain soldiers were resting in their quarters on the base.
According to reports, this strike killed more Americans than any other assault on American forces since a suicide bomber in Kabul murdered thirteen Americans in 2021, just before the United States withdrew from Afghanistan.
