With many more Democratic votes than Republican ones, the House of Representatives approved a measure Thursday night that temporarily extends government financing. Though Republicans have a tenuous majority in the chamber, this is the fourth occurrence of its like this year, so if it seems familiar, that's because it is.

It makes no difference who is in the majority or who is sitting in the speaker's chair, an irate Representative Chip Roy of Texas said in his floor statement just before the vote. "We keep doing the same stupid stuff."

House Speaker Mike Johnson was instrumental in negotiating the short-term budget package, which ultimately passed by a vote of 314 to 108, with 207 Democrats and 107 Republicans in favor. Only two Democrats joined the 106 Republicans who voted against it.

The measure will now move to President Joe Biden's desk in the days leading up to Saturday, when a partial government shutdown might have occurred, after having comfortably cleared the Senate earlier on Thursday.

Members of the House Freedom Caucus and others attempted to attach strict immigration rules to the must-pass package, but it passed nevertheless, despite last-minute right-wing complaints.

Republicans on the right have been fuming at Johnson for the same reasons they were at McCarthy: they say he isn't doing enough to push their extreme agenda items through must-pass legislation, even if Democrats still control the House and the Senate. In order to finance the whole government for the remainder of the year, lawmakers now have two deadlines: March 1 and March 8.
