As both candidates attempt to use the nation's flawed immigration system to their political advantage in an anticipated campaign rematch this year, President Biden and Donald Trump will make opposing excursions to the US-Mexico border on Thursday. PR spokesperson for the White House Karine Jean-Pierre said on Monday that Biden would visit Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, a location that often sees a high volume of border crossings. Meeting border agents, he will talk about the need for legislation that is supported by all parties. Per the AP, it would be President Biden's second trip to the border. January of last year was his trip to El Paso.

According to three individuals who talked with the AP on condition of anonymity about the arrangements, Trump will go to Eagle Pass, Texas, which is around 325 miles distant from Brownsville, another flashpoint in the state-federal conflict over border security. The visits highlight the significance of immigration in the 2024 presidential contest, both for Republicans and Democrats alike. This is especially true given the breakdown of legislative negotiations for a compromise to control immigration.

As part of his attempt to win reelection, Trump's team claims that Biden's intention to go to the border is an indication that the president is becoming defensive about immigration. The "biggest immigration problem in history" is due to Biden, according to Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who claimed that Biden was pursuing Trump. Following news of Trump's scheduled travel, the White House made its statement. House Republicans are on the defensive, according to Biden's team, after Trump said he had instructed GOP lawmakers to kill the measure that would have provided funding for border officers and other Homeland Security officials.
