Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley issued a warning on Friday, stating that she did not want former president Donald Trump to use the Republican National organization as a "piggy bank" to pay his legal bills, and that he was trying to "gain control" of the organization.

Haley expressed her worry to CNN host Kaitlan Collins about Trump's efforts to oust current RNC leadership after a court's finding that the ex-president was guilty of tax evasion and ordered him to pay about $355 million.

That amount might increase by about $100 million due to interest on the payments alone. In addition, a jury determined that Trump had harmed writer E. Jean Carroll's character, so in January, a judge ordered him to pay an extra $83.3 million to her. In a different case from 2023, a judge convicted Trump guilty of sexual assault and sentenced him to pay Carroll $5 million.

My main concern is that the Republican National Committee should not end up funding his legal defense. According to Haley, she does not want the Republican National Committee to end up funding her husband's legal battles. "His personal legal fights have already consumed fifty million dollars in campaign donations," she said.

It seems that he is now attempting to gain control of the RNC in order to avoid paying for his own legal bills, according to Haley. The issue is that if the Republican National Committee is just concerned with his legal bills, it will not help us gain any seats in the House or Senate. Already, the RNC is in a precarious financial position.

With Ronna McDaniel due to step down after the South Carolina primary on February 24, Trump has endorsed Michael Whatley, head of the North Carolina Republican Party, to replace McDaniel as chair of the Republican National Committee. Lara Trump, the former president's daughter-in-law, has received the endorsement of her father for the position of cochair of the committee.

In her appearance with CNN, Haley strongly criticised Trump for his growing meddling in RNC business.

He attempted to remove me from the campaign so he could become the presumed candidate, and now he is attempting to get control of the Republican National Committee, she said. He needs an arm to pay for his legal bills, therefore that is why. That ought to be the dread of every Republican.

In 2021 and 2022, the Republican National Committee dispersed around $2 million to two legal firms representing the former president prior to his entry into the Republican primary. According to sources on campaign finances, Trump spent around $50 million in 2023 on his legal bills from his fundraising committees.
