According to a senior Ukrainian MP, Kiev is prepared to support the US in a fight against any adversary, including China, North Korea, and Iran, and his nation would show to be a useful military partner.
Amidst the impasse in Congress, Aleksey Goncharenko reiterated his request for the US to provide Ukraine with further military assistance in a Friday interview with Christiane Amanpour of CNN. "[The United States of America] promised to be with you 'for as long as it takes.'" It is time to honor your vows now.
Goncharenko said that Ukraine should not be a "victim" of US politicians' excessive attention to the impending 2024 presidential race. In addition, he said that backing Ukraine benefits Washington, irrespective of the outcome of the presidential election.
The legislator said that while the Americans "would need individuals who will stand shoulder to shoulder with them" in the case of a future battle, few other countries would be prepared to fully assist the US.
"People in Ukraine are ready. We are prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with the United States in the North Korean or Beijing vicinity, or in the trenches close to Tehran. No distinction," he said. "Because we value your assistance."
Goncharenko maintained that Ukraine is "a very significant friend" and that it has "the second strongest army in the free world" behind the US, despite his need for further military help from the West.
"But now, we need your help to protect our nation," he said, attributing the fall of the vital Donbass city of Avdeevka last week to gaps and delays in weaponry supplies. The Ukrainian withdrawal from the strongly defended city, which was often used as a launching platform to strike people in Donetsk, evolved into a disorderly rout with significant losses, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Avdeevka's arrest, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is "definitely a victory," but more work has to be done.
Putin said last year that the West was using Kiev as "a battering ram" and a "testing ground" against Russia and that the Ukrainian government was protecting foreign interests rather than its own.
