Following the ruling that Donald Trump, his adult sons, and the Trump Organization must pay over $360 million for their bank and insurance fraud, New York Attorney General Letitia James celebrated her triumph on Friday. A few hours earlier, Manhattan's civil bench trial judge Arthur Engoron rendered his decision. James, however, said at a news conference that the Trumps would have to pay interest on the already enormous amount.
"To unfairly benefit himself and his family and to deceive the system, Donald Trump fraudulently and willfully inflated his net worth by billions of dollars,” the statement said. "We demonstrated the extent to which Donald Trump's deception unfairly benefitted him, his family, and his business. The court decided today, once again, in our favor and the interests of all law-abiding, hardworking Americans. The court ordered that Donald Trump and the other defendants pay $463.9 million. That amounts to $100 million in interest and $363.9 million in disgorgement, and the interest will compound daily until the balance is paid.
In addition to Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., two of the company's executives, each have a $354 million payment order against them. Allen Weisselberg, the former CFO of the Trump Organization, has to pay $1 million. The former president also faces a three-year ban from operating a company or holding corporate officer positions in the state of New York.
Trump has already said that he would fight the decision and has criticized it on Truth Social.
