At least one House Republican has come to the conclusion that the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was a mistake after the House Republicans failed to adopt a stand-alone measure for Israel funding and the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas of the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday night. Eight House Republicans spearheaded the effort to oust McCarthy in October, and at the end of the year, he withdrew from Congress entirely. Following heated internal discussion, Republicans promoted House Speaker Mike Johnson.
"It is official—removing Speaker McCarthy has become a catastrophic event. The Kentucky GOP Representative Thomas Massie posted on X that "all work on separate spending measures has halted." "In exchange for higher expenditure, spending has decreased. The temporary extension of warrantless snooping has occurred. We no longer have a majority."
In order to extend the deadline for the chamber to pass a complete budget until March, the House enacted a temporary funding package in January. The legislation separated the March 1–8 deadlines for the several appropriations measures. If Congress does not pass new funding bills within that window of time, there may be a government shutdown. In reaction to Massie, Florida GOP Representative Matt Gaetz, who spearheaded the drive to oust McCarthy, justified the action.
"McCarthy betrayed us, engaged in covert dealings, escalated expenditures, lost to Biden, and reduced our majority by resigning when he was unable to lead the organization." It was right to remove him," he said.
