Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wasted little time in pressing Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to put the $60 billion for Ukraine up for a vote in the House, after the Senate's triumph with 70 votes. In addition, he disregarded Johnson's request that the Senate approve strict border changes in order to address the influx of migrants at the southern border.

After the vote, Schumer remarked at a news conference, "Now it is on to the House to meet this moment, to do the right thing and safeguard democracy as we know it." In order to persuade Johnson to bring the measure to the House floor, Schumer said he intends to talk with him personally.

"I want to have a direct conversation with Speaker Johnson. I want to convey that we are living in a unique time when history is observing the United States to see whether we can defend our principles, confront bullies like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, and make the correct decisions," he said.

"I will tell Speaker Johnson that I have every confidence this measure will get a resounding majority of votes in the House. He said, "I am sure a lot of Republicans in his caucus feel passionately that we should approve this law. "I will urge Speaker Johnson to act appropriately in this situation."

Schumer emphasized that the measure received 22 Republican Senate support.

Furthermore, he disregarded Johnson's request that Democrats consent to include language bolstering border security in the midst of a spike in immigration that reached 10,000 per day on average in December.

The main point is that a sizable majority supported and approved this measure. We must move swiftly to provide supplies to Ukraine. We must go forward with passing the Senate measure as soon as possible because we cannot wait another three or four months to act," he said.

Democrats "were willing... to go many steps in the direction of a strong, tough border bill," he contended, pointing out that the border security agreement reached by Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) received support from the Wall Street Journal, the National Border Patrol Council, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

He lamented that "too many Republicans gave in to the manipulations of Donald Trump," alluding to the Republican pushback against the package after Trump's insistence that they reject the bipartisan agreement.

Additionally, Schumer disapproved of Trump's suggestion to provide money to Ukraine as assistance. He said, "Look, the House ought to approve our measure." "We should continue to support this law. Nobody even has a clue as to how this loan scheme operates. Republicans should not follow suit just because Donald Trump makes an impromptu statement.
