In a move that underscores the need of a swift trial, special counsel Jack Smith beat the former president's deadline by six days by asking the Supreme Court to deny Trump's emergency petition to postpone his election meddling trial on Wednesday. In his filing, Smith made mention of the election in November.

He said, according to NBC News, "Delay in the resolution of these allegations threatens to undermine the public interest in a swift and fair verdict—a strong interest in any criminal case and one that has a particular national relevance here." Trump wants more time for his legal fight to establish his immunity; Smith disagreed, arguing that Trump's case is insufficient for the Supreme Court to get involved.

The criminal trial was scheduled to begin on March 4, but it was postponed while lower courts deliberated on Trump's claim of immunity, which was denied by a federal appeals court. According to the New York Times, delays may drag the trial far into the presidential campaign or perhaps beyond it. According to CNN, Smith addressed the Supreme Court, "The alleged offenses strike at the core of our democracy." Next, Trump's team has the opportunity to respond to Smith's case before the Supreme Court, which could reach a decision in a matter of days.

According to the AP, the court may reject Trump's emergency appeal or continue the hearing while it considers arguments on immunity.
