The already slim Republican majority in the House has decreased, and it is too late to save Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, from being impeached. In a fiercely contested contest to unseat the Republican in a special election on Tuesday, Democratic candidate Tom Suozzi—who had served three terms as the representative for New York's 3rd congressional district before to former Representative George Santos' election in 2022—came out on top.

Santos's expulsion from Congress prompted a special election, which he won against GOP challenger Mazi Pilip. The AP called the race for Suozzi roughly an hour after polls closed, when it was around 59% for Suozzi to 41%, for Pilip, with 52% of the vote tallied. The district encompasses portions of Queens and Long Island.

A snowfall hampered traffic for the extraordinary election. Suozzi decided against seeking reelection in 2022 and instead launched a failed bid for governor. Speaker Mike Johnson will only be able to afford to lose two votes on any political item once he takes the House seat, according to the New York Times. Although Pilip, a member of the Nassau County Legislature who served in the Israel Defense Force, and Suozzi are anticipated to run again in the November election, the 3rd district will have changed by then, as noted by Nathaniel Rakich at 538.

Rakich believes that the newly formed 3rd congressional district would seem "at least a little bit different—and possibly bluer." The state was compelled to redraw congressional boundaries in December.

Immigration played a significant role in the election; according to the Times, Suozzi, whose win ends a Democratic losing streak in Long Island, pledged to collaborate with Republicans on stricter border regulations. According to the AP, Jim Prokopiak, a Democrat and former member of the school board, won a special election on Thursday to fill a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. This victory means that Democrats will maintain a 102–100 majority in the body.
