At the Sunday Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift won best pop vocal album for Midnights. During her victory speech, she disclosed a "secret" that she claimed to have been concealing for the last two years: her next album would be released on April 19. Swift uttered the name, "The Tortured Poets Department." "I am going backstage right now to display the cover." Soon later, the album cover appeared on Instagram with the comment, "Everything is fair in love and poetry." According to People, Swift's 13th Grammy victory—her lucky number—was the best pop vocal album.

The announcement especially surprised fans, since many had been expecting Swift to reveal the release date of Reputation (Taylor's Version), the much awaited reissue of her 2017 album.

According to USA Today, Swift's website seemed to shut down in the hours before the Grammy Awards. However, the "error messages" that flashed on the seemingly downed site were obviously hints, and many people thought they pointed to the re-release of Reputation. Instead, after making her announcement, Swift's website relaunched with a new look and pre-orders for Tortured Poets Department, her impending new album.

Reports from Glamour Swift had long made suggestions about what many took to be Reputation (TV), but as it turns out, all of her "Reputation-coded" attire and other actions were only smoke screens (as one of the lines on her website's fictitious error notice said).
