Prince George's County, Maryland, police say a shooting outside an apartment complex on Thursday killed a 3-year-old kid and wounded his mother.

Somewhere in the 1400 block of Kanawah Street is where the shooting happened. According to the police, a detective responded to reports of gunshots at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and discovered a wounded woman and kid in a courtyard on the block. "I am dealing with a little child who has sustained gunshot wounds," the investigator said over radio.

As soon as they could get there, paramedics took the youngster to Children's National Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead. Despite her injuries, the mother's health remained stable after being transported to a hospital in Washington, DC.

Someone wants to come out here and play with weapons, and that small baby did not deserve to die, Asst. Chief Vernon Hale said. When bullets land, they do so with tangible effects. I hope they were not attempting to murder a youngster, but I really do not know.

The county's deputy chief administrative officer for public safety, Barry Stanton, expressed his deepest sympathies to the family and the mother who lost her 3-year-old kid in this terrible act of violence.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire in the neighborhood, prompting some to contact the authorities. The events leading up to the shooting remain unclear, according to the police. No one can say for sure at this point whether it had anything to do with a carjacking or not.

No suspects were named in the press release. "A woman gets shot and will not get to raise that baby; a kid is dead," Hale added. "The future PG police officer and the life of his dreams will elude that little one."

Any tip that leads to an arrest in this case may earn you a prize of $25,000. “This isn’t about snitching," Hale said. "Justice for the victims is at stake here."
