Donald Trump Claims Legal Troubles Boost Popularity Among Black Americans

Comparing his legal limbo to the long history of anti-Black bias in the US court system, former President Donald Trump said on Friday that his four felony charges have increased his popularity among Black Americans because they see him as a victim of discrimination.

Basing his allegations on strong circumstantial evidence that President Biden or White House officials had any hand on the filing of 91 felony charges against him, Trump maintains that he is the victim of political persecution.

Trump had earlier this week drawn comparisons to Russian President Vladimir Putin's main domestic opponent, Alexei Navalny, who passed away in a remote Arctic prison after his incarceration by the head of the Kremlin, according to the AP. Before Saturday's Republican primary in South Carolina, Trump said at a black-tie affair for Black conservatives, "I was indicted for nothing, for something that is nothing."

In addition, Trump said, "Many people believed that the reason Black people admire me is because they have experienced such great harm and discrimination, and they really believed that I am the target of discrimination. Although it is been very great, maybe there is something there."

Black lawmakers, including Reps. Byron Donalds of Florida and Wesley Hunt of Texas, surrounded him on the stage at the Black Conservative Federation dinner in Columbia. Trump used racial humor and pleas to the Black community into his usual campaign speech. "It is difficult for me to see too many people outside since the lights are so bright." However, all I can see are the Black ones. There are none that I can see. To applause from the crowd, Trump said, "That is how far I have come."

In addition, Trump remarked on the mugshot that Georgia officials had obtained after his indictment on state racketeering charges related to the 2020 race. "That mugshot is No. 1 from when I took it in Atlanta," he said. "You know who loved it more than everybody else? The people of African descent."

Because Black construction workers constructed his houses, he said, he knew a lot of Black individuals. Republicans will have a difficult time winning over Black voters, the majority of whom lean Democratic. In addition, although Black voters' excitement for Biden has decreased over the last year, a December AP-NORC survey found that only 25% of Black Americans thought favorably of Trump.

Black voters voiced doubts about Republicans' ability to get them to vote for another party. In the last 40 years, Trump is the only politician or businessman who has been successful in shifting the support of Black voters to Republicans.
