University of Colorado–Colorado Springs Lockdown Lifted After On-Campus Shooting Incident

Following the discovery of two bodies shot in an on-campus residence hall, the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs has lifted its lockdown. After gunfire was reported on Friday morning around six a.m. local time, according to Colorado Springs police, students, staff, and anyone else at UCCS was told on social media to lock their doors, turn out the lights, and "move away from sight." "Avoid opening the door. Keep quiet, the warning instructed.

About five minutes after the first call, police say they discovered two victims inside a dorm room with gunshot wounds, according to CBS News.

Approximately 9:30 am saw the lifting of the lockdown and the shelter-in-place order, although the day's lessons remained cancelled. Early on Friday afternoon, authorities said on social media that they thought the event was "an isolated occurrence" and that there was not a continuing danger to the public.

Police provided an additional update later on Friday night. "This occurrence does not seem to be a murder-suicide at this juncture in our investigation, and both fatalities are being examined as murders," they stated, according to CNN.

A UCCS statement, obtained by KKTV, said, "The last several hours have been terrible for our Mountain Lion community." "Unfathomable violence has entered our household, leaving our hearts heavy with anguish."

Although the school said that the campus would be available for "help and healing," CNN reports that the campus will stay closed on Saturday and Sunday, and there will not be any courses on Monday. Counselors are reportedly available to assist any pupils having difficulty processing this information. If you have any information on the shooting, the police ask that you call them at 719-444-7000 or anonymously report the crime at 719-634-STOP (7867).
